British Athletes Take On AJ Bell 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Sunderland

There are four British athletes in individual action at AJ Bell 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series Sunderland on Saturday 29 July, the day before a quartet take on the mixed team relay.

Barclay Izzard, Jack Willis and Max Stapley represent British interest in the elite men’s race. Izzard arrives in Sunderland after securing his best finish of the season as he came ninth in the individual race at the European Games and helped win a silver medal in the mixed team relay.

He also has World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) experience having competed at three stages so far this season. Like Izzard, Willis is familiar with WTCS events having raced in Montreal, Hamburg and Yokohama already this year. Stapley completes the trio of Brits on the start line and is making his WTCS debut after finishing 12th at 2023 World Triathlon Cup Tiszaujvaros in his last race.

Olivia Mathias is the only Brit on the start line for the elite women’s race. She started off the season with a silver medal at 2023 Arena Games Triathlon Series Sursee Powered by Zwift before coming seventh in the 2023 Arena Games Triathlon Finals London Powered by Zwift.

The 24-year-old, who has not competed in WTCS since 2021, comes into Sunderland after coming 12th at 2023 Europe Triathlon Championships Madrid at the start of June in her most recent race.

After the individual action there will be the mixed team relay, where the British team will be looking to return to the podium after finishing 14th at 2023 World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships Hamburg.

Mike Cavendish, British Triathlon Performance Director, said: “This is a special opportunity for our athletes to compete on home soil. We know how great a home crowd is and how it pushes the athletes on and can help them find an extra few seconds of race pace.

“I know that the team are all really looking forward to Sunderland we can’t wait to see how the course comes together and what the weekend brings us.”
